Jim Kalina - Lead Vocals, Alto Saxophone, Blues Harmonica, KeyboardsJim Kalina sings lead vocals for Without Annette band

Jim has been singing for as long as he can remember. One of his first musical memories, even though he was only 4 at the time, was seeing the Beatles make their U.S. debut on the Ed Sullivan Show. This was his first musical inspiration. Jim never had any real formal training with singing or any of the instruments he plays, other than a few casual lessons here and there. A family member gave him a harmonica when he was still in grade school, and taught him a few licks. His parents encouraged him to play the trumpet when he was in fifth grade because there was one in the house, but he really wanted to play the sax. One day in his college years, after watching a sax player in a local band the night before, Jim went to a pawn shop and bought his first sax. He learned to play this by ear and by playing along with various albums (anyone over 35 should still remember albums). The first band that Jim sang in was Probe. He got into this band when a couple of his friends were talking in their art class about needing a singer for their band. Jim said he'd give it a try, and was then bitten with the music bug. The first "big" public appearance was at the high school variety show where Probe performed Jumpin' Jack Flash and, (what else?) Freebird...remember it was the seventies! Probe went on to play for a few years before calling it quits. A few short-lived groups came and went after that. Then in the early '90s he went on to be a co-founding member of Common Ground, another local cover band. They stayed together until the late '90s, disbanding about a year before Without Annette formed. Jim also continues to sit in and jam with other musician friends around town whenever possible to keep the chops fresh and for fun. His musical influences and inspirations are wide and varied, and too many to list all of them here. Some of the obvious ones are the Beatles, Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, Van Morrison, Tom Waits, Bonnie Raitt, Buddy Guy, Taj Mahal, Bob Marley, Boz Scaggs, Al Green, The Band, Southside Johnny, Nick Cave, Roy Orbison, Allman Brothers, John Lee Hooker, Otis Redding, Marvin Gaye, and many, many more.
